Brief explanation of the module

This module aims to introduce young people to the concept of social innovation, including green/ eco-social, provide examples of social innovation, explore issues that could potentially be addressed and help young people develop, through tailor-made activities, innovation skills. Presentations, videos, quizzes, short activities and exercises aim to familiarize the students with the existing social challenges and the essence of social innovation.

The module offers:

  • Lesson plan that contains description of the subgoals and ways for realization of the recommended learning and teaching aspects, learning material, media and tools;
  • PowerPoint presentations through which the educator can simplify and illustrate with photographs and graphs the concept of social innovation;
  • Videos – through which the concept of social innovation and examples of social innovation are presented and explained;
  • Activities intended for a school environment, training spaces and online environment as well, fostering innovation skills, knowledge on social innovation and how to get
  • inspired;
  • Exercises such as quizzes to check any given knowledge;
  • Template for each activity and exercise with instructions on how to implement them;
  • Relevant articles on Social Innovation;
  • Resources for further research.

Aim of the module

The goals of the module are:

  • to introduce young people to the concept of eco-social innovation
  • differentiate between Social entrepreneurship and Social Innovation
  • guide them through the process of being inspired
  • present the areas where social innovation makes the greatest impact
  • young people will be encouraged to develop, through tailor made activities innovation skills.
  • Check the knowledge on Social Innovation

General instructions

Educators, teachers can choose which resources they would like to share with the target groups. Presentations and videos can serve as an initial introduction to the topic.

However, if they want to do an activity, the video and the presentation are incorporated in it.

The module is divided into three sections:

  • Introduction to the concept (presentation and video)
  • The styles of Social Innovation
  • Innovation skills

The activities can be done in student pairs or groups, but they can be realized individually as well.

They can be realized online and physically.

The exercises are:

  • quizzes
  • research activities
  • “check your knowledge” exercises
  • for fostering skills.

The time frame given is indicative and depends on the way the educator works, the target group (prior knowledge, age, number of participants), the goal he wants to achieve and the interaction between audience and instructor.

It is desirable for the educator to have experience working with young people, as well as knowledge and skills related to topics such as: innovation, climate change, ecology, social enterprise etc.

Lesson 1: Introduction to the concept

Тhe lesson give a introduction about the topic regarding the following points:

  • What is social innovation;
  • What does social innovation comprise of;
  • The difference between social entrepreneurship and social innovation etc.

Lesson 2: The styles of Social Innovation

The goal of lesson 2, is to get the participants inspired by examples of (eco-)social innovation by conducting research in the field.

Lesson 3: Innovation skills

Type of activity that is covered in lesson 3 is:

  • Brainstorming/problem-solving
  • The participants work on their innovation skills and think about solutions to everyday issues.

Tips and tricks (with solutions to exercises and activities)

  • For the realization of the activities, you can use digital tools such as Miro board, google forms, videos, photos etc.
  • Effective teachers must be able to adapt their teaching approaches to the age of their students and the resources available in a continuously changing environment.
  • Teach each student as an individual by being compassionate and understanding of their circumstances.
  • Collaboration, communication, creative, and critical thinking should all be prioritized. To ensure highly effective teaching and to make learning more rigorous and relevant in the twenty-first century, these skills should be an intrinsic element of teaching and learning.
  • Educate people in the field about your impact and best practices.
  • Always practice empathy.
  • In your display of examples, always try to be inclusive, of women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities or marginalized groups. It is important for the students to be
    able to identify with those examples.
